Finnish Inflection Drill

About

A drilling app for Finnish noun cases and verb conjugations. Pick a mode, narrow the pool with filters if you want, and type the inflected form for each prompt until your thumbs know it by heart.

How a drill works

You're shown a Finnish lemma (the dictionary form) and a target inflection. Type the correct form and press Enter. If you're wrong, the expected answer appears — press Enter again to move on. If you're right, the next challenge loads automatically.

Where Wiktionary has them, each challenge also shows up to two example sentences with English translations. Sentences that would give away the answer are filtered out automatically.

Modes

• Nouns — drills cases (nominative, genitive, partitive, etc.) in singular and plural. Toggle cases in the grid or limit the pool to specific KOTUS noun types.
• Verbs — drills conjugations across tense, voice, polarity, and person. Filter by any of those axes and by verb type (1–6).

Filter presets

Once you've dialed in a filter selection you like, click Save current… under Presets (between the filter grid and Test mode) and give it a name. Saved presets are per mode — noun and verb presets are kept separate — and clicking one applies it instantly. Reuse the same name to overwrite.

Test mode

Set a number of questions and the app runs them back-to-back without showing whether each one was right. At the end you get accuracy plus a review list of anything you missed. Statistics still update normally.

Options

Everything configurable lives under the Options tab, grouped into Appearance, Drill behavior, Feedback, and Data.

• Theme — System (follows your OS), Light, or Dark. Persists across sessions.
• Require correct answer to advance — wrong answers don't auto-reveal; keep trying until you get it.
• Challenge selection — Random picks uniformly, Focus misses biases toward forms you get wrong, and Spaced repetition (the default) uses an FSRS-lite scheduler: each form gets a stability that grows when you answer correctly and collapses when you miss. Items on the verge of being forgotten surface most; mastered ones still re-appear at the cap you pick so nothing ever disappears forever.
• Hide answers longer than N characters — skips awkwardly long forms (partitive plurals, compounds, etc.).
• Limit pool to most-common words — restricts drills to the top N most common Finnish words by frequency rank. Helpful early on; turn it off once the basics feel solid.
• Speak answer automatically — play the correct form aloud when it's revealed.
• Vibrate on wrong answer — short haptic buzz on mobile devices that support it.
• Export / Import stats — back up or restore your drill statistics, settings, and streak as a JSON file.

Daily streak

The small flame badge in the title counts consecutive days you've answered at least one drill correctly. Miss a day and it resets to zero, but your best run is kept so you can see your record.

Statistics

Expand the Statistics section at the bottom of the drill view for a breakdown of your accuracy. Alongside per-case, per-tense, and per-type tables there's a Per word view: one row per lemma, rolling up everything you've attempted for that word, with a pointer to your weakest form. Sort by most wrong, most attempts, accuracy, or alphabetically, and filter by substring to find a specific word.

Audio

Audio uses your device's built-in text-to-speech. Most desktops and phones have a Finnish voice installed. If yours doesn't, you'll see a warning in Options and the audio buttons are disabled.

Offline & install

This is a Progressive Web App — once loaded, it works offline. From your browser's menu you can install it to launch like a native app.

Privacy

All your drill statistics, settings, streak, SRS schedule, and presets are stored locally in your browser — nothing is sent to any server. The site does load anonymous usage analytics via Google Analytics (no account, no personal data), which helps me see rough traffic levels so I know the app is being used. If you'd rather not be counted, any standard content blocker will silence it.

All word data, translations, and example sentences are scraped from the English Wiktionary's Finnish entries via the machine-readable dumps at kaikki.org. Wiktionary content is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
